The dining room was full of people when I entered, none of them Leif. A maid in a black uniform looked up as I lingered in the doorway. “May I help you, sir?” Her accent was faint, more Eastern European than Greek.

I shook myself. “Um, yeah… Where is everyone?”

I had woken up alone, Leif’s side of the bed empty and no sign of him anywhere. The house struck me as inordinately quiet for eight o’clock in the morning.

I wondered if Petra’s migraine was any better.

“Mr. Claeson and Mr. Holloway took the yacht into the city, sir.”

“At this hour?” I asked, perplexed.

The maid hitched her shoulders elegantly. “Mr. Newton and his friend went to the tennis court.”

I appreciated her efforts to qualify Demetrius as Carmine’s friend rather than his fuck-buddy. As best as I was able to tell, sex and good looks were all they had in common.

“Thanks… And Ms. Claeson?”

With an apologetic smile, the maid shook her head.

I thanked her again. I thought about heading upstairs and checking on Petra, but last night’s clash with her brother stopped me short. I was in no rush to get chewed out by another Claeson.

Trying not to feel as though I’d been forgotten, I snatched an apple from the fruit bowl in the foyer and made my way out of the villa through the seldom-used front door.

The scent of gardenias and roses in full bloom assaulted me as soon as I stepped onto the flagstone path.

Ligeia blossomed, white puffy clouds drifted gently overhead while closer to the ground the warm breeze combed through the tree boughs. From the edge of the property, I had a clear view of the egg-shaped bay with its jagged White Gate, battered by foamy waves.

The natural harbor sheltered the bobbing jetty from the wilder waters beyond. The Albatross remained moored in port, sails folded and sun-bleached deck gleaming in the morning glare, but the motorboat was gone.

I had no reason to doubt the maid’s word, but it was still disappointing to discover that Leif had, in fact, gone without a word.

A few lazy seagulls circled above the cove. I looked on as the bravest of the flock swooped down to snatch a fish from the tide swell. Prey safely in its beak, the bird ascended with a few harsh wing beats. My gaze remained on the beach.

Demetrius had Jesse pinned beneath him in the sand, thick dreadlocks drooping over his shoulders like tentacles. At first I thought they were wrestling, but then I registered the back and forth roll of his hips. Jesse wasn’t trying to get away so much as clawing at Demetrius’ back and hugging his flanks with his knees.

Tennis, it sufficed to say, was not Demetrius’ preoccupation just then.

“I’ve never been one for al fresco sex, myself,” a voice said over my shoulder.

I turned to Micah with cheeks hot. “Back to sneaking
